Daniele asks for some advice about his niece

Good morning,

My niece turned 12 years old and after quite a lot of years of competitive level gymnastics she had a muscle injury in February in the groin area diagnosed by an ultrasound scanning. After three months there were no improvements: she slightly limps and the orthopaedic surgeon she’s being followed by carried out an x-ray examination, by diagnosing the Perthes disease.

I was wondering if to remove inflammation you would recommend hyperbaric therapy.

Thank you very much,

    Dear Daniele,
I’m really sorry for your niece. In your e-mail you write me about a muscular and bone problem, that is to say the Perthes disease. Hyperbaric therapy could be recommended for the osteonecrosis of the femoral head which characterizes Legg-Calve-Perthes’s disease.
To understand if your niece is suitable for hyperbaric therapy we should see the pelvis x-ray and the hip magnetic resonance imaging.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proved to be really useful and often decisive when the bone still keeps its spherical shape.
This is due to its beneficial effects, such as:
    – Suffering bone oxygenation
    – Formation of new blood vessels
    – Stimulation of the cells responsible for new repairing bone tissue formation
Besides hyperbaric therapy, at the Hyperbaric Centre of Ravenna we evaluate the necessity to combine other therapies such as rehabilitative physiotherapy, physical or pharmacological therapies thorough a physiatrist visit.
